Healthy Heart Tip: Don’t Let the Words “Raw Food” Scare You.
Dec 17th 2009 · by Jon
We all know people who, to either maintain heart health or to get healthy again, are encouraged (or required) to change their lifestyle and/or diets. In fact, it is a rare person who won’t be challenged, by the overall effects of “just living”, to periodically re-examine and make adjustments to how they eat, exercise, and even think!
What we put into our mouths (our diet) has a profound effect on the quality of our lives and it is a constant challenge not only educate ourselves about what really is healthy, but we must also often re-learn what we have been told in the past by well meaning people or unscrupulous advertisers.
I have become more a fan of raw foods to gain the benefit of their unadulterated nutritional components. Unfortunately, when I tell people of this interest, they sometimes put on a funny face and claim food like that couldn’t really taste all that good.
So, whenever I run across a great example of healthy, whole, raw dishes that people would really love, I like to tell people about them – and that’s just what happened several weeks ago when my friend, Kimberly Snyder (visit her great blog at Kimberly Snyder’s Health and Beauty Blog) came by the house for an of raw food preparation and consumption. Kimberly, among other things, is a nutritionist and raw food specialist who appears as a food and lifestyle correspondent on national TV. More importantly for me, she is a friend who will come over to the house and let me prepare healthy raw foods with her – always a real tasty and educational treat for me!
On her last visit, after a fun meal of raw vegan sushi rolls, wonderful zucchini dip, and Body Ecology ginger squash soup,
Kimberly brought our her Kimberly’s Raw Pecan Love Pie – a newly created recipe recently highlighted in a full-page Thanksgiving feature in US Weekly.
While always excited to try Kimberly’s raw culinary masterpieces, I am generally not a fan of traditional pecan pie, so I politely, but cautiously, bit into my slice and then went on to devour an additional helping. It was delicious!
So delicious that I decided to serve it to my family over the Christmas Holidays and tonight I completed my “test” run at my Mom’s house. It was fun and easy to prepare – with all natural and RAW ingredients – and I look forward to my taste test later on this evening!
Don’t be afraid of the word “RAW” when applied to the foods you eat.
Great cooks, like Kimberly Snyder, can whip up raw recipes that are not only super nutritious and healthy for your heart (and the rest of your body), but also taste great!
If you’re looking for a New Year’s resolution, why don’t you do your heart a favor by finding some great tasting raw dishes to add to your family’s diet – your family thank and your heart will thank you!
If try Kimberly’s Raw Pecan Love Pie, let me know how you liked it and, if you have a favorite raw food recipe, send it to me!
Bon appetite!
